As 2012 Ends ….

As 2012 comes to an end, I continue to introduce myself to new beginnings. That’s just the way it goes as I continue to move at the Speed of Life!!! I’m not going to bog anyone down with the details of my daily life, but what I will say is I’m VERY content right now. Notice, I used the word content. By definition, content means “In a state of peaceful happiness”. So, I’m not overly excited nor am I feeling low about my past experiences. I’m proud of my current state of being. My students are moving along well, people still buy my book, I’m still asked to hit the stage every once in a while to perform my poetry, I’m still asked to pose for photographers who think I’m worth shooting, I’ve been accepted to the school of my dreams, my company is flourishing, and you have not heard the last of my voice across the airwaves. I have family and friends who love me, and who I deeply love in return. Those who have chosen to stay in my life are cherished; those who have chosen to move on are cherished for the difference they made during the time in which the Lord allotted their presence in my life. I fully accept that I am blessed. You do the same! Life is full of surprises, let downs, happiness, and so on, but learn to be content with what you have been given. Some people have that chance taken away all too soon, and I’m sure we all understand this without me going into detail.

As 2012 Ends take a second to look back and reflect. You and I are on the precipice of a new beginning, as we always are at this time each year. I believe for me, each move I make is a tough act to follow, but I follow up nonetheless….again, you do the same, take a leap of faith…2013, and the rest of your life is waiting!!!

Massachusetts Voter Registration Deadline is Oct. 17
Boston residents who want to vote in the 2012 presidential election and other federal and state races have until Wednesday, Oct. 17 to register. Here’s how, with links to mail-in voter registration forms and how to request an absentee ballot.

The Massachusetts voter registration deadline is Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012.
Boston residents who wish to vote in the 2012 presidential election and other federal and state races have five weeks left until the Massachusetts voter registration deadline.
The registration deadline is Wednesday, Oct 17. The Boston Election Department is located in City Hall, Room 241, and is open from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. on the voter registration deadline day for in-person registrations.
Residents can also download a mail-in voter registration form on the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s website. Once that form is filled out and signed, it must be mailed to the Boston City Clerk’s Office (address above) and postmarked by Wednesday, Oct. 17 for you to be eligible to vote.
Massachusetts also allows voters to vote by absentee ballot, according to the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s website, if they:
• Will be absent from their city or town on Election Day, and/or
• Have a physical disability that prevents them from voting at the polling
place, and/or Cannot vote at the polls due to religious beliefs.

Absentee ballot applications can be downloaded from the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s website or picked up at the Boston Election Department’s office. The deadline to apply for absentee ballots is noon the day before the election, Monday, Nov. 5, although it is recommended to submit the application as soon as possible.
If you are voting from outside the United States, your completed absentee ballot can be received up until 10 days after the election, but must be postmarked on or before Election Day.

Sparkle (2012) – Movie Review

Anyone that knows me knows I love a good musical movie. So I jumped at the chance to check out Sparkle.

The story is about three sisters who form a group in hopes of making it big and gaining a record deal. The film, a remake, takes place during the 1960’s in Detroit. Jordin Sparks, Whitney Houston, Derek Luke and Mike Epps are just a few of the great actors featured in Sparkle. This was Jordin Sparks’ debut and Whitney Houston’s final film appearance.

There are some similarities to the original Sparkle, which was made in 1976, however, there were some differences such as the location and the musical features throughout the film.

Overall, I really enjoyed the music and the fact that the headliner of the film, Jordin Sparks, wasn’t the lead singer of the group, which is often the case in many storylines. The soundtrack features music from R&B hit maker R. Kelly and music from the original film from Curtis Mayfield.

The message I took away from this film is to never give up on your dreams, believe and yourself and never stop trying.

RIP Whitney Houston.

Sparkle – 2012 hits theaters August 17, 2012

I’ve been laying low for a while. It’s been a necessary task. Why? Because resting helps you gather your strength. Life has been changing…ALOT. Now, I’m not one to share my personal circumstances in public, and I’m not going to start today, but I felt compelled to say something to the many people who have supported me. I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU! It’s been amazing to me to see how people can have faith in you, regardless of knowing you personally.

You see, I’ve spent more time than one should, trying to prove to the people I love, I could better than the person they seemed to believe I was. It took longer than it should have to realize this was a futile journey. I learned many lessons along the way. One is, if someone loves you, truly loves you, they will be there waiting for you even when the rollercoaster ride of emotions comes to an end. This is why family is so important. It took me a long time to realize that too.

I’ve always been a bit of a lone wolf; even within my family. I’m good at being alone, and even better at pushing people away. It’s a defense mechanism embedded deep within my psyche. This brings me to the next thing I learned. It takes strength to hold on. I’ve never been one to do things the easy way, or so I thought. Come to find out, everything just seemed tougher because when it came to holding on to people; I let go when things got hard. It’s been one hell of a fight, but I’ve been in the process of changing that; and change in life is inevitable.

If we don’t change, we don’t grow, if we don’t grow, we don’t learn what we need in life to sustain. Every step of our lives brings us to a new plateau. At each elevation, the temperature changes, and so should we.

Therefore, I decided to take a step back in order to gather my strength to continue to move forward. Life is about balance. Mental, Spiritual, Social, and Familial equilibrium is what I have learned is necessary in my life. I’m taking my time walking the tightrope. You should too.

In closing, again, I want to say thank to those who have spent their time listening to me on the radio, those who have purchased my book, those who have watched me perform and cheered me on. You have not seen the last of MsToyaTiffany. Trust me, I’m only getting started. ‘Cause a sistah like me will always DO MY THANG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
